Chapter Two
He whirled around quickly, his expression one of anger. “That shit isn’t funny, Sera.”
She blinked. “It’s not supposed to be.”
There was a white line around his lips as he loomed over her. “You don’t say stuff like that. Not everyone will take it as a joke.”
“It’s not a joke,” she said in a steady voice, though she trembled with a hint of fear. Not because she thought Jack would hurt her, but because there was a tangible tension in the air. A harbinger of something to come…something she was sure she wanted, but was still slightly afraid of just the same.
Jack bent over her until their faces were only inches apart. “I don’t know what kind of game you’re playing, but don’t push me, Sera. I suppose you’ve heard the rumors and decided to have a bit of fun, but I’m not amused, and I won’t tolerate this. I will put you over my knee and paddle you like the brat you’re being if you keep this up.”
Her body jolted at the mental image of being over his knee, but curiosity won over the darker impulse to encourage his discipline. Catching her lower lip between her teeth, she stared at him for a moment until she felt brave enough to ask, “What rumor?”
Still bending over her, Jack moved slightly to sit on the coffee table. She had to bite back the urge to giggle as she imagined her mom’s face if she saw ass smudges on the wood.
“I’m sure you’ve heard about Camilla and me?” When she shook her head, he frowned. “Well, it was before your time, I suppose, but people do seem to enjoy a good rumor even years afterward.”
Impatiently, she asked, “What rumor?”
“Our marriage wasn’t happy, but that was mainly because we were too young. She is five years older than me and wanted a baby, which I didn’t want at first, being eighteen. I think it was more her mother who wanted grandchildren, and she didn’t want to miss out on her inheritance.”
He rolled his eyes. “Either way, she wanted to get pregnant as fast as possible. It was like being a stud service and really screwed up our relationship. We had trouble conceiving, and Camilla blamed me, but she did get pregnant with Julie eventually. When we split, she claimed Julie wasn’t mine, probably to hurt me more, or maybe it was her mother’s idea. She spread rumors that I was impotent and infertile.”
Sera’s eyes widened. “You? Impotent?” She barely bit back a giggle at the ridiculous idea. A man as virile as Jack couldn’t possibly be unable to get an erection. “Ms. Dillard claimed you aren’t Julie’s dad?” That was a ridiculous thought too.
He lifted a shoulder. “I refused any damned testing. My name is on her birth certificate, so I’m her father legally. I didn’t want to know if Camilla had gotten knocked up by some loser and passed the baby off as mine. Julie is my daughter, whether she is biologically or not.
